PALO, Leyte– The Department of Education (DepEd) in Eastern Visayas is set to hold this year’s Regional Schools Press Conference (RSPC) and Regional Festival of Talents (RFOT) cum Yes-O Camp and Science-Math Fair simultaneously on Nov. 12 to 15 in Hilongos, Leyte.
RSPC aims to give opportunity for both elementary and high school campus writers to enhance their learning experiences and skills through various journalistic competitions.
DepEd Regional Director Luisa Bautista-Yu, in a memorandum, said that RSPC will also help student writers to “sustain advocacy on social consciousness…and promote responsible journalism and fair and ethical use of social media.”
The competition is geared on the theme “The role of 21st Campus Journalists in Upholding Good Governance, Leadership, and Transparency.”
Winners will represent the region in the 2016 National Schools Press Conference in Koronadal City, North Cotabato.
The event will cover journalistic competencies such as news writing, copy reading and headline writing, feature writing, editorial writing, editorial cartooning, photojournalism, science and technology writing, scriptwriting and radio broadcasting, and collaborative desktop publishing with e-publishing.
Also to be awarded are this year’s outstanding school paper advisers and campus journalists in the region.
Meanwhile, the RFOT provides venue for students to showcase their expertise specifically in arts, language, science, math, social studies, and technology and livelihood education (TLE) through “exhibitions and performances.”
The Yes-O camp aims to enhance creativity and knowledge of the students as they will join in various discussion of innovative ideas.
Winners in the RFOT will qualify for the national competition.
According to Sarah Cabaluna, of the regional office Curriculum and Learning Management Division (CLMD), they are expecting more participants this year.
She estimated that over 6,000 people comprising students, their coaches and other education officials will join the said two events hosted by Hilongos district. PNA
